CONGRATULATIONS GAVIN!!!

Our former Boatswain, Gavin Walker, has earned the Quartermaster Award, the highest rank in Sea Scouting. Quartermaster is roughly the equivalent of Eagle Rank for Boy Scouts, but it is far more difficult to get. Roughly one-half of one percent of all Sea Scouts earn Quartermaster, which translates to approximately 30 recipients nationwide each year. In contrast, over 60,000 Eagles are awarded annually representing approximately six percent of all Boy Scouts. Gavin’s Quartermaster will be formally presented to him at the Annual Sea Scout Bridge of Honor in February.

Members of the Sea Scout Ship Yankee Clipper, sponsored by the Lions Club of West Seattle, helped Gavin with a community service project for his Quartermaster Award.

Together, they built a new campfire ring and repaired two existing rings at Camp Long in West Seattle for the Seattle Parks Department. Camp Long is a 68 acre park dedicated in 1941 “as a place for Seattle’s youth, that they might learn camping and climbing skills in a unique setting within the city.” The Sea Scout Ship Yankee Clipper has been associated with Camp Long since its inception. The camp is named for a former scout leader and juvenile court judge, William G. Long, who dedicated his life to serving youth.
